Early Spring Newsletter 2008
A belated HAPPY NEW YEAR to you all. I feel like my feet haven't touched the ground with so many exciting projects on the go. Mid January saw the opening of an Exhibition using Blue & White in design based on a collection of English Blue & White china owned by Artist Tom Hickman. As a welcome to the exhibition, Kaffe took advantage of the proud marble columns at the entrance to the historic gallery, wrapping them in his blue and white target fabric along with hand painted strips of paper to mock blue and white tiles running up the stairs. The fabulous mosaic and needlepoint artist Candace Bahouth embellished antique high heeled shoes and mirror frames to name a few surprises. Celebrated artist Sir Peter Blake RA opened the exhibition to 780 guests attending, plus a further 1,200 visitors on the first day. The Exhibition is at the Victoria Galleries, Bath until the end of March. For those who cannot get there – here is a link to a site with pictures from the exhibition. All the pieces on exhibit are for sale including a range of mugs Kaffe designed for Burleigh Pottery.
Peruvian Connection mail order catalogue has done us proud again with 4 beautiful designs by Kaffe using their pima cotton yarn range. Following Kaffe's visit with his family last Christmas holiday his niece Erin Gafill, a successful artist and writer in her own right, put up a link on her web site of some of Kaffe's one off pieces that are available though The Phoenix Shop at the famous Nepenthe Restaurant in Big Sur California. For more information, on these pieces and other work please contact Amanda via email. She is the manager of the Phoenix Shop.
Already this year is jam packed with dates for workshops and lectures. May 1st we will be at the Treasure Hunt, in Carpenteria, CA, south of Santa Barbara giving a patchwork workshop. As a foot note – if anyone is looking for discontinued fabric designs of Kaffe's ever moving patchwork fabric range – check in with the Treasure Hunt – the owner has a huge stash! Kaffe will be giving a lecture in Ventura, CA on May 2nd, also sponsored by Treasure Hunt. There will be a knit class at Cardigans knit shop in Santa Barbara on May 4th, followed by a two day Color In Design knit workshop at Uncommon Threads. Then a hop, skip and a jump up to Portland, Oregon, one of my favourite cities in the US, to host a class through The Yarn Garden in conjunction with the patchwork Spring Quilt Market there. Then on to visit Sisters, Oregon for a time with the dynamic mother and daughter team Jean and Valery Wells at The Stitching Post.
Following on from that please do check in on our calendar events page where dates are being booked into 2009 such as a Patchwork tour of Hawaii in February. Contact Traveling Together for further information. A patchwork workshop tour though Europe has been arranged by our European fabric distributors Rhinetex, a knit workshop up in Fife, Scotland in September.
The daffodils are popping up, birds have found their voices again and the days are getting longer – hurray!
On a final note – we were charmed to see that Hillary Clinton chose to give one of her Super Tuesday speeches in front of a version of Kaffe's 'Handkerchief Corners' quilt and how well it works with her canary yellow jacket. You can see the clip at this link: Eye To Eye: Economy (CBS News)
