PRE-ORDER NOW!

This book, the 15th in Rowan's very successful patchwork and quilting series, picks up on the popularity of Downton Abbey! Shot in the stately home of Port Eliot in Cornwall, the country seat of Lord and Lady St Germans, this scintillating collection of quilts showcases the latest Kaffe Fassett Collection fabrics from Westminster Fibers.

Kaffe leads, as usual, his team of master quilt designers, producing some truly stunning new quilts. Marmalade and Cartwheel by Liza Prior-Lucy are colourful show-stoppers; Lorna Doone by Corienne Kramer, Dotty Frames by Kaffe himself and Dreamy Hexagons by Liza are exquisitely subtle, with a delicate water colour palette.

If your taste is for strong geometrics, then Roberta Horton's Geese in Flight and Brandon Mably's Paper Dolls are bound to catch the eye. Brilliant photography by Debbie Patterson and with clear and accurate quilt instructions by Pauline Smith and Ruth Eglinton, this book is going to be a sure-fire winner with all enthusiastic quiltmakers. It features 20 quilt designs: by Kaffe himself, Liza Prior Lucy, Brandon Mably, Pauline Smith, Roberta Horton, Mary Mashuta, Corienne Kramer and Sally Davis.

NEW!

Inspired by worldwide travels and a plethora of ethnic textiles, including the quilts of the Amish and from Gee's Bend in America, Japanese all indigo quilts, suzanis from the Caucuses, and Pakistani kanthas, the projects featured in this book include full sized bed and wall quilts as well as well as smaller pieces that can be completed more quickly, such as throws, table runners and pillows. With Shots + Stripes, Fassett is answering the modern quilt community's call for quilts that make bold graphic statements that are less time consuming and complex than some of the work for which he has been previously celebrated. While still serving his core audience of long time devotees and celebrating his and their passions for vibrant colour, Fassett is introducing himself to a new generation of quilters with the types of projects they're currently seeking.

NEW!

Kaffe Fassett has led an extraordinary life and is a captivating storyteller with a vivid memory. Born in 1937, he spent much of his youth in Big Sur, California, where his parents bought a cabin from Orson Welles and transformed it into the world-famous Nepenthe restaurant, a gathering place for artists and bohemians. After attending a boarding school run by the disciples of Krishnamurti, an Indian guru, he studied painting at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, then traveled to England, where he made his home. After an inspiring trip to Inverness, Scotland, Fassett began designing knitwear for Bill Gibb, and then the Missonis, Vogue magazine, and private clients like Lauren Bacall and Barbra Streisand, and, in the process, revolutionized the handknitting world with his explosive use of color. Further explorations led him to needlepoint, mosaics, rugmaking, tapestries, yarn and fabric design, costume and set design, and quilting. Now in his seventies, Fassett continues to produce new work and to travel worldwide to teach and lecture. In this intimate autobiography, Fassett shares rich, detailed stories about his lifelong creative journey as well as hundreds of glorious photos taken along the way.

In Kaffe Fassett's Simple Shapes Spectacular Quilts, world-renowned quilter Kaffe Fassett demonstrates how basic geometric forms - squares, rectangles, triangles, diamonds, circles and quarter circles - found in natural and manmade environments inspire his quilt designs. This is evident in the 23 magnificent, inventive quilts showcased in this book and step-by-step instructions are provided for each one. Along the way, Fassett also offers over a hundred photos of geometric inspiration from around the world - everything from triangular watermelon slices, to rectangular sheets of corrugated metal on African scrap dwellings, to lollipop-shaped topiary trees in Japan. The New Country Style,
England

The New Country Style, England, Inspiration for Modern Living

new-country-style-england.jpg

Ingrid Rasmussen and Chloe Grimshaw
Thames and Hudson 2006

Featuring Kaffe Fassett's and Brandon Mably's Seaside Home

The first in a new series that breathes freshness into interior and lifestyle books, The New Country Style England presents a wide array of rural retreats, seaside cottages, forest huts, and nature getaways. While the city home has undergone countless well-documented stylistic changes, there has been a quiet revolution going on in the countryside. The picture of pastoral perfection (think chintz) is being reinvigorated and modernized by the creativity of a new generation of owners, reflected in the stylish (and sometimes utterly unexpected) interiors of their homes. A converted neo-Gothic church is home to a contemporary furniture maker and his family, with Arne Jacobsen chairs in the dining room, Pucci upholstery in the chapel, and a trampoline for the children in the nave. In Gloucestershire, a dark wooden bed from Lombok is tucked into the eaves of an old rectory, while a Venetian glass chandelier hangs in the dining room, and hand-painted Chinoiserie adorns the walls. The mix of colours and textures, palettes and patterns, and, most importantly, a commingling of eras all help to make this book a visual delight. The intrinsic value comes with the hundreds of photographs, an incredible juxtaposition of detail, and a handsome heft. The New Country Style England showcases interiors that redefine traditional country style with wit, fun, and modern taste. It's the rustic experience with a here-and-now twist!

Mosaics

Mosaics

mosaics.jpg

Ebury Press 1999

Superb colourist Kaffe Fassett departs from his usual medium of textiles to unleash his magic on the world of mosaics. Teamed with expert needle artist-turned-mosaicist Candace Bahouth, Fassett proves no less adept at manipulating the harder materials--glass and ceramic tesserae, broken china and tiles, mirror fragments, pebbles, seashells, and even faux pearls--than his accustomed softer substances of fabric and yarn. As with most of Fassett's oeuvre, this volume is more an assemblage of highly imaginative ideas than a traditional how-to approach. A number of the projects do include step-by-step instructions and there is good coverage of the basics (tools, materials, bases, tesserae preparation, adhesives, grouting), but the presentation presumes the readers' willingness to experiment, as well as some degree of confidence in their own creativity. But again, as is typical of Fassett's productions, the simple act of leafing through these pages offers unlimited inspiration.

Over 25 Glorious Quilt Designs
Ebury Press 1997

Glorious Patchwork represents yet another craft breakthrough for Kaffe Fassett, who has fearlessly conquered the worlds of colour knitting, needlepoint, and rug hooking. Here he teams up with quilt designer Liza Prior Lucy to produce a series of colour-drenched patchwork designs that have a powerful impact and a subtle, pleasing symmetry. Fassett's text is chattier and more interesting than in his previous works; he is more capable of communicating the inspiration he finds in the natural patterns that the rest of us hardly notice. This is a book that will thrill textile and fiber craftspeople.

Kaffe Fassett's
Glorious Interiors

Kaffe Fassett's Glorious Interiors

glorious-interiors.jpg

Needlepoint, knitting and decorative design projects for your home
Ebury Press 1995

Many designers have the gift of gab; few can actually write. Kaffe Fassett is a delightful exception. Indeed, the text of Glorious Interiors is something rare in interior design: a down-to-earth account of a complex and sophisticated personal style. Drawing inspiration from circuses, fairgrounds, the Watts Towers in Los Angeles, the liveries of Pakistani trucks, and Slavic peasant costume, Fassett dedicates his book to 'all those with a touch of gypsy who share my vision'. Going by the vibrant kitsch, the obsessive repetition, and the migrainous, fractal surfaces of his trademark interiors, one suspects that not a few of them have ended up, tragically, in decidedly minimal circumstances, complete with soft white walls and bars on the windows.

Fassett's embroidered flower gardens, frog cushions, trompe l'oeil flower plates, and postage-stamp lampshades teeter spectacularly on the knife's edge separating genius from schizophrenia; his text, meanwhile, really makes the reader think--in a way few other books have ever done--about the emotional power of the richly patterned traditions of eastern Europe and the Indian subcontinent. Fassett contends that Western interiors--the best of them evoking 'a sterile beigeness ... that chilled me to the core' - have lost all sense of humour. And he knows just what we need to get it back.

"Fassett has firmly established himself as the single most exciting craft-and-color expert today". - Booklist.

For knitting and needlepoint that explode with a riot of colour and pattern, nothing beats these brilliant projects. But, this is more than a simple collection of eye-grabbing costumes and tapestries to make--it's a lesson in style by a truly original and fearless designer who doesn't hesitate to go gloriously over the top. And, that makes these brilliant photographs of objects that inspired his work--which range from small Oriental sculptures to London's stone walls--almost as much fun to look at as the projects are to do. Compare luminous blue-and-green Persian pots with a similarly shaded blue patch crewneck--and then knit the sweater yourself, either using the given colours or choosing other, equally rich tones that suit your own wardrobe.

Kaffe Fassett's Glorious Needlepoint

Ebury Press 1987

This guide explores the full potential of needlepoint as an inspirational source. Kaffe's samples come from the natural world - the patterned markings of frogs, butterflies, flowers, shells and stones - the manmade markings of primitive cultures and the world of 20th-century art. The ideas and designs are grouped into chapters on: fruits and vegetables, fish and fowl, flowers and foliage, faces and fans, and jugs and geometrics. As well as charted patterns, the embroiderer is given many ideas for producing his or her own designs for colourful rugs, shoulder bags, cushions and other items - rooster tea cozy, maroon flower pyramid cushion, shoulder bag carpet, plum, pear and duck cushions.
